Inspired to study the climate after experiencing a hurricane as a child in Honduras, Dr. Jose Martinez Claros is an atmospheric physicist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography studying atmospheric rivers — long, narrow regions in the atmosphere that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics. He earned his B.S. in meteorology from the Universidad de Costa Rica, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in atmospheric physics from New Mexico Tech. He has studied lightning in the mountains of New Mexico, and ridden through storms aboard a NASA hurricane-hunting airplane.
